About glass and glassware

HS code 70 covers a wide range of glass and glassware products, which are essential materials in various industries. Glass is a versatile material that is used for windows, containers, tableware, and a multitude of other applications. The glass industry plays a crucial role in the global economy, providing raw materials and finished goods to support construction, manufacturing, and consumer markets.

Production process

The production of glass and glassware involves several key steps. First, raw materials such as sand, soda ash, and limestone are melted at high temperatures to form molten glass. This molten glass can then be shaped using various techniques, including blowing, pressing, and drawing, to create a wide range of products. The finished glass items may undergo additional processing, such as annealing, tempering, or coating, to enhance their properties and durability.

Production inputs

The main inputs required for the glass and glassware industry include 2505 Natural sands, 2511 (Natural barium sulphate (barytes)), 2513 Pumice stone; emery; natural corundum, natural garnet and other natural abrasives, and 2520 Gypsum; anhydrite; plasters. Additionally, the industry relies on specialized machinery and equipment for the melting, shaping, and finishing of glass products.

Production outputs

The glass and glassware industry produces a diverse range of outputs, including 7010 Carboys, bottles, flasks, jars, pots, phials, ampoules and other containers, of glass, of a kind used for the conveyance or packing of goods; preserving jars of glass; stoppers, lids and other closures, of glass, 7013 (Glassware of a kind used for table, kitchen, toilet, office, indoor decoration or similar purposes (other than that of heading 70.10 or 70.18)), and 7014 (Signalling glassware and optical elements of glass (other than those of heading 70.15), not optically worked). These outputs are often consumed by industries such as 2310 Manufacture of glass and glass products, 2599 Manufacture of other fabricated metal products n.e.c., and 2620 Manufacture of computers and peripheral equipment.
