Aluminium oxide (including artificial corundum); aluminium hydroxide

HS v2017 Code: 2818

About aluminium oxide (including artificial corundum); aluminium hydroxide

HS code 2818 covers the production and trade of aluminium oxide, including artificial corundum, as well as aluminium hydroxide. These materials are essential inputs for a wide range of industries, from metallurgy and ceramics to chemicals and abrasives. As a key component in the production of aluminium metal, the aluminium oxide industry plays a vital role in the global economy, supporting industries such as construction, transportation, and consumer goods manufacturing.

Production process

Aluminium oxide is primarily produced through the Bayer process, which involves refining bauxite ore to extract the aluminium content. The key steps include crushing and grinding the bauxite, dissolving it in a sodium hydroxide solution, and then precipitating the aluminium hydroxide. This is then calcined at high temperatures to produce the final aluminium oxide product. Aluminium hydroxide, on the other hand, is often obtained as a by-product of the Bayer process or through the direct precipitation of aluminium salts.

Production inputs

The main raw material input for the aluminium oxide industry is bauxite ore, which is mined from deposits around the world. Other significant inputs include energy sources, such as electricity and natural gas, to power the refining and calcination processes. Specialized equipment, including crushers, grinders, and calcination furnaces, are also essential for the production of aluminium oxide and hydroxide.

Production outputs

The primary outputs of HS code 2818 are aluminium oxide and aluminium hydroxide. Aluminium oxide is a key input for the production of 7601 Unwrought aluminium under HS code 7601, as well as for the manufacture of 6815 Articles of stone, of plaster, of cement, of asbestos, of mica or of similar materials and 6901 Bricks, blocks, tiles and other ceramic goods of siliceous fossil meals or of similar siliceous earths. Aluminium hydroxide, on the other hand, is used in the production of 2815 (Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda); potassium hydroxide (caustic potash); peroxides of sodium or potassium) and 3206 Other colouring matter; preparations as specified in Note 3 to this Chapter; inorganic products of a kind used as luminophores, whether or not chemically defined.
